Mount Melsetter is a Family farm which has been in the Family for three generations. Named after Melsetter, a listed House on the island of Hoy in the Orkneys, it has been continuously farmed since the late 19th Century. Sheep have always been the mainstay of the farming operations, and in the mid 1940’s the farm was part of the prestigious Southey Brothers Thoroughbred Horse Stud, the brothers being Candy’s father Richard Southey, and Candy’s Uncle, Tommy Southey. David, Candy’s brother, reintroduced several of the Antelope species presently on Melsetter in the late 1980’s, which led to the start of the hunting operation, Great Karoo Safaris, which today has both a National and International clientele. There is an interesting Fossil history on Melsetter, with links to Fossils found on the Antarctic Continent. A midden left by prehistoric Bushmen and their prehistoric forebears has been found on the farm by Zimbabwean Geologist Tim Broderick, which is easily accessible. Melsetter’s original farm house is the Lodge exclusively for the use of guests, filled with History, graciously and comfortably furnished, presided over by your Hosts, Mike and Candy.
